Men’s Track and Field Posts Several Impressive Performances at Suffolk Relays

BOSTON, Mass. – The MIT men's track and field team returned to action on Saturday with several strong performances at the Suffolk Relays at The TRACK at New Balance.

THE BASICS:
  • No Team Score
HOW IT HAPPENED – TRACK EVENTS:
  • 60m Dash: Junior Patrick Haertel (Cumming, Ga.) finished fifth with a time of 6.99 as the top four finishers were separated by just .04 seconds.
  • 500m Dash: Fellow junior Jared Steins (Chino Hills, Calif.) led a trio of Engineers in the top 10 as he finished sixth with a personal-best time of 1:06.50.
  • 1,000m Run: Senior Simon Opsahl (Redlands, Calif.) took fourth with a time of 2:29.77 and was the top Division III finisher in the event.
  • 3,000m Run: Sophomore Yichen Sun (Chapel Hill, N.C.) clocked a personal-best time of 8:40.03 en route to a third-place finish and led all Division III runners.
  • SMR: The quartet of senior Ian Koe (San Mateo, Calif.), sophomore Davis Lee (Mountain Brook, Ala.), sophomore Connor Sterling (New Milford, Conn.) and first-year Wyatt Vick (Chillicothe, Ohio) finished third in a time of 3:38.11.
HOW IT HAPPENED – FIELD EVENTS:
  • Pole Vault: First-year Jaden McKee (Riverside, Calif.) made an immediate impact in his debut as he was the top collegiate finisher and took second place overall with a mark of 4.75m (15' 7").
  • Triple Jump: Junior Sean Huckleberry (San Francisco, Calif.) was the top collegiate finisher in the event as he notched a mark of 13.93m (45' 8 1/2").
  • High Jump: Sophomore Anthony Meng (Scottsdale, Ariz.) added a third-place finish of his own as he posted a mark of 2.05m (6' 8 3/4").
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • MIT's sprint medley relay team now sits as the ninth-best all-time performance in NCAA indoor history.
  • Sun's time of 8:40.03 in the 3,000 meters surpassed his previous personal-best of 8:46.98 that had been set at the Suffolk Ice Breaker last season and is the third-best in the East Region this winter.
  • McKee's mark of 4.75m in the pole vault is tied for the top mark in the East Region along with Colby's Peter Martel and ranks among the top 10 nationally.
  • Huckleberry now holds the top triple jump mark in the East Region thus far during the indoor campaign.
  • Meng previously held the top mark in the East Region at 2.00m and surpassed that mark with today's performance.

  • The Engineers will return to action on Saturday, January 18 for the URI Invitational that will get underway at 10:00 AM.
