SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The MIT field hockey team fell to Western New England University, 2-1, in overtime in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday night.
Meredith Wu recorded the Engineers' lone goal late in regulation.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After 45 minutes of scoreless play, Western New England broke through just 55 seconds into the fourth quarter when Mackenna Cooke redirected a feed from Mikayla Mrzywka.
- MIT controlled the action for most of the frame as it produced five shots – two on goal – and three penalty corners before tying the game with 3:21 left to play. During a penalty corner, Bailey McIntyre's shot was saved but Wu collected the rebound and slipped it past Alex Tardugno.
- The Engineers continued to press down the stretch as they were awarded three penalty corners and recorded a trio of blocked shots during the final 45 seconds of action, but they could not generate the go-ahead goal.
- MIT maintained its offensive pressure in overtime with three penalty corners and two shots on goal. Maeve Zimmer turned away a shot by the Golden Bears, but after a shot by McIntyre that went wide, Mrzywka netted the game-winner with 2:47 on the clock.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Zimmer ended the night with six saves while Tardugno collected 13 saves.
- The Engineers had the upper hand in shots (27-9), shots on goal (14-8), and penalty corners (13-1).
