Field Hockey Falls to No. 24 WPI, 3-1, in NEWMAC Semifinals

WORCESTER, Mass. – No. 3 seed MIT fell to nationally ranked No. 24 and No. 2 seed WPI, 3-1, in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Field Hockey Championship on Thursday. Shealy Callahan scored the lone goal for MIT.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 24 WPI 3, MIT 1
  • Records: MIT (12-8 Overall); No. 24 WPI (14-4 Overall)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WPI opened the scoring just 34 seconds into the game when Abbey Powers connected on a pass from Arie Lang.
  • MIT tied the game in the ninth minute when a long pass by Marisa Montione was deflected by Jane Tortorella at the top of the circle. Callahan then one-timed it to the near post.
  • WPI then went up 2-1 with 1:50 left in the frame as Powers knocked in the rebound of her previously saved shot.
  • In the second quarter, MIT had a 3-0 advantage in shots, with one on goal, and a 3-1 margin in penalty corners, but it was unable to produce the equalizer.
  • The third quarter was a defensive battle as both teams recorded one shot. An attempt by Sierra Kim in the 32nd minute was blocked while Lang's bid went wide.
  • WPI ended the stalemate in the 52nd minute when Chloe Luongo redirected a feed from Eve Martineau to go up 3-1.
  • MIT put together a late surge as it generated five penalty corners and four shots – two that were saved and two that were blocked – during the final 2:15 of regulation, but it could not cut into the deficit.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Maeve Zimmer and Myles Lankin both made two saves for their respective teams.
  • MIT led the way in shots (11-7) and penalty corners (12-3), but WPI had the edge in shots on goal (5-4).
