Sport Shorts Spotlight: MIT Athletics Celebrates Another Historic Fall Season
The MIT fall sports season was a semester defined by historic streaks, conference dominance, and deep national runs. The women’s soccer team proved to be a juggernaut, capturing their third consecutive NEWMAC title and riding a 19-match conference winning streak all the way to the NCAA Sweet 16, tying a program record with 22 wins. On the court, women’s volleyball secured their fourth conference crown in five years and advanced to the NCAA Regional Final. Cross Country continued its dynasty at the conference level, with the men winning their 27th straight and the women their 18th straight NEWMAC titles, before cementing their elite status with dual top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, where the women placed 5th and the men 9th. The fall also featured standout moments across the department, including the football team’s first victory over Salve Regina since 2014 behind a four-interception defensive effort, a dramatic shootout win for field hockey over No. 9 Nationally ranked Amherst, and Fiona Lee earning a spot in the ITA Cup for Women’s Tennis.
With fall championships already secured and the winter teams setting a relentless pace athletically, the stage is set for an impressive second semester. As the calendar turns to 2026, the Engineers are poised to build on this historic momentum.
