BOSTON, Mass. — MIT senior Ziyad Hassan (Ashburn, Va.) continued his record breaking indoor season, posting the seventh fastest Division III Mile All Time as the No. 5 MIT men's track & field team took to the track at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.
Hassan now owns the top Division III times this season in both the 800m and the Mile, after running a 4:01.13 mile on Friday. Hassan also set this season's top time in the 800m at BU, recording his time at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on February 1st.
HOW IT HAPPENED - TRACK EVENTS:
- 400m: Junior Kristian Praizner (Folsom, Pa.) was 21st in 49.13. He was followed by sophomore Davis Lee (Mountain Brook, Ala.), who was 30th in 49.53 and first year Wyatt Vick (Chillicothe, Ohio) who finished 75th in 51.03.
- 800m: Sophomore David Whitaker (Northville, Mich.) took 43rd with a PR of 1:50.97. Senior Simon Opsahl (Redlands, Calif.) was 72nd in 1:52.91 and first year Alex Naehu (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) was 135th in 1:54.99. Senior Pau Ilerbaig-Bajona (Toronto, Canada) add a time of 1:55.61 to finish 140th, sophomore AymanNoreldaim (Iowa City, Iowa) was 148th in 1:56.01. Naehu and Noreldaim each registered PRs.
- 200m: Lee took 54th with a PR of 22.63.
- Mile: Hassan was 59th to lead a group of seven MIT runners. Senior Sam Coutts (Pacific Grove, Calif.) also placed in the top 100 in 4:04.51, while classmate Pablo Arroyo (Richardson, Texas) finished 144th with a PR of 4:07.82. Junior Tim Neumann (Downers Grove, Ill.) placed 189th in 4:10.61, junior Charlie Glass (Austin, Texas) was 220th in 4:12.38, first year Chris Chan (Goshen, Ind.) was 302nd in 4:20.14, and sophomore Jaxon Miller (Goshen, Ind.) was 324th in 4:23.02.
- 3000m: Junior Jake Cobb (West Deptford, N.J.) registered a new PR to finish 152nd in 8:16.06. First year Renne Cooper (Austin, Texas) was 205th in 8:27.61, classmate Owen Sondag (Fargo, N.D.) was 211th in 8:29.23 and grad student Nicholas Medearis (Palo Alto, Calif.) was 227th with a personal record of 8:32.59.
- 5000m: Sophomore Nate Martinez (Thompson's Station, Tenn.) was 212th in 15:32.04.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Praizner, Lee and Vick all set personal records (PR) in the 400m. Praizner is seventh in the region, followed by Lee in 11th and Vick in 40th. Lee is also 39th in the region in the 200m.
- MIT is the top ranked team in the nation in the current USTFCCCA 800m Squad Rankings. Hassan leads the nation, while Whitaker's PR on Friday was the sixth fastest time in Division III this season and Opsahl mark was the 22nd fastest time in the country.
- Hassan leads the nation in the mile, one of four MIT runners now in the top 50. Coutts' time ranks him fifth in Division III, while Arroyo now ranks 17th and Neumann is 20th. MIT owns four of the top six mile times in the east region.
- Cobb's time in the 3000m ranks him 31st in Division III and second in the region. Cooper and Sondag are each in the top ten in the region thanks to their performances, while Medearis ranks 14th.
- Martinez is 25th in the region in the 5000m.

- A busy weekend for the squad continues tomorrow, as MIT is set to host the Gordon Kelly Invitational at the Johnson Athletic Center Track. The team will also be action across town at the Tufts Stampede.
