Personal Records Fall for No. 4 Men's Track & Field on Opening Day of NE DIII Indoor Championships

BOSTON, Mass. — Behind multiple personal records and a region best time from senior Walter Truitt (Houston, Texas) in the prelim of 60m Hurdles, the No. 4 MIT men's track & field team is currently in sixth place following day one of the 2025 New England Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.

THE BASICS:

  • MIT Team Score: 6th of 21 (10 points)
  • Top-Five Team Scores: 1. Amherst (43), 2. Tufts (38), 3. Bates (25) 4. Middlebury 22 5. Connecticut College (11) 

HOW IT HAPPENED - TRACK EVENTS:

  • 60m Hurdles Prelim: Truitt advanced to Saturday's final with the top prelim time and a personal record of 8.12 seconds. Junior Enoch Ellis (Garland, Texas) finished with a time of 8.48 seconds and first year Stan Nicole (Chene-Bougeries, Switzerland) was 11th with a time of 8.51 seconds.
  • 60m Dash: Junior Patrick Haertel (Cumming, Ga.) advanced to the finals with a time of 6.98 seconds. Classmate Nolan Clement (Fullerton, Calif. ) was 13th at seven seconds flat. Grad student Will Liu (San Marino, Calif.) finished 18th in 7.05 seconds, with classmate Garrett Whitmore (Webster City, Iowa) taking 28th in 7.18 seconds.
  • 600m: Senior Pau Ilerbaig-Bajona (Toronto, Canada) was 16th with a PR of 1:22.42. First year Wyatt Vick (Chillicothe, Ohio) finished 21st with a PR of 1:23.68 and sophomore Ayman Noreldaim (Iowa City, Iowa) was 25th with a PR of 1:23.75.
  • 1000m: First year Chris Chan (San Antonio, Texas) was 15th with a PR of 2:33.38.
  • 5000m: First year Owen Sondag (Fargo, N.D.) was fifth in 14:37.24 and classmate Renne Cooper (Austin, Texas) was sixth with a PR of 14:41.83.
  • Distance Medley Relay: First year Luke Rupert (Hill City, S.D.), senior Andrew Spears (Albuquerque, N.M. ), sophomore Hunter Miller (Greencastle, Ind.) and first year Landon Hering (Minnetonka, Minn.) took 12th in 10:40.74.

HOW IT HAPPENED - FIELD EVENTS:

  • Shot Put: Sophomore Justin Buonato (Horsham, Pa.) was sixth with a mark of 14.83 (48' 8").

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • With an eye on Saturday's final, Truitt is now 19th in the nation in the 60H after his performance in the prelims. His time was the best in the region this season. 

UP NEXT: 

  • Day Two of the New England Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at The TRACK at New Balance in Boston begins at 11:00 AM on Saturday.
