No. 18 Men's Track and Field Impresses as MIT Hosts Sean Collier Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The No. 18 MIT men's track and field team hosted the 2025 Sean Collier Invitational at Sherie and Don (1961) Morrison Track at Steinbrenner Stadium, ending the weekend with nine Division III top 50 marks.

TOP PERFORMERS - Running Events:

  • 4x100m Relay: Grad student Garrett Whitmore (Webster City, Iowa), junior Nolan Clement (Fullerton, Calif. ), grad student Will Liu (San Marino, Calif), and junior Patrick Haertel (Cumming, Ga.) cruised to the win in the 4x100m, finishing in 41.47.
  • 1500m: First year Landon Hering (Minnetonka, Minn.) took sixth in 4:03.32 and classmate Luke Rupert (Hill City, S.D.) was seventh in 4:03.93.
  • 110m Hurdles: Senior Walter Truitt (Houston, Texas) was second in 14.26 seconds.
  • 400m: Junior Kristian Praizner (Folsom, Pa.) finished as the runner-up in 49.20 seconds. Junior Ian Koe (San Mateo, Calif.) was third in 49.21.
  • 100m: Junior Nolan Clement (Fullerton, Calif.) was the runner up with a time of 10.58. 
  • 800m: Sophomore David Whitaker (Northville, Mich.) finished third in 1:52.41. 
  • 200m: Clement took 4th in 21.76 seconds, with grad student Mozi Guobadia (Baton Rouge, La.) following in 5th in 21.88 and classmate Will Liu (San Marino, Calif.) in sixth in 21.95. 
  • 4x400m: MIT had the top two times in the final relay. The Engineers were one of three teams that competed in the event, along with Lasell College and Northeastern. Liu, Praizner, Koe, and sophomore Connor Sterling (New Milford, Conn.) had the top time in 3:22.93.

TOP PERFORMERS - Field Events:

  • Javelin: Sophomore Jonah Goldstein (Pasadena, Calif.) was 2nd with a mark of 57.26m (187'10"). First year Marc Baker (Landrum, S.C.) also finished in the top ten, taking sixth with a throw of 53.58m (175'9").
  • Long Jump: Junior Nathan Shapiro (Glenview, Ill.) took third with a mark of 6.69m (21'11.5").
  • High Jump: Junior Jackson Bliey (Talleyville, Del.) and sophomore Anthony Meng (Scottsdale, Ariz.) swept the top two spots. Bliey won the event by clearing 2.12m (6'11.5"). Meng cleared 2.06m (6'9").
  • Pole Vault: First year Ethan Soderbloom (Stoughton, Wis.) was sixth, clearing 4.27m (14'0").
  • Hammer Throw: Sophomore Justin Buonato (Horsham, Pa.) won the event with a throw of 47.26m (155'1"). First year Gavin Reardon (Ward, Ark.) was third with a throw of 42.82m (143'9").
  • Triple Jump: Junior Sean Huckleberry (San Francisco, Calif.) and first year Sawyer Quallen (Princeton, N.J.) finished 1-2 for MIT. Huckleberry won the event with a mark of 14.45m (47'5"). Quallen had a mark of 13.86m (45'5.75").
  • Shot Put: Reardon was 21st with a mark of 10.78m (35'4.5") on his second attempt. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Clement's time in 100m is now 38th in Division III. 
  • Whitaker is 35th in the 800m behind three other MIT competitors in the top 32.
  • Truitt moved inside the top ten nationally in the 110 Hurdles, he is now eighth with a time of 14.26.
  • Whitmore, Clement, Liu, and Haertel now own the 36th fastest time in the 4x100 relay.
  • Bliey and Meng are both in the top five nationally in the high jump. 
  • Huckleberry moved to 15th nationally in the triple jump.
  • Goldstein moved up to 40th on the national list in the javelin.
