Brandeis Defeats Softball in Extras, 2-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The two teams were locked in a 1-1 tie into the ninth inning before visiting Brandeis scored the go-ahead run to earn a 2-1 win over the MIT softball team on Wednesday afternoon on Briggs Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Brandeis 2, MIT 1 (9 Innings)
  • Records: MIT (18-9 Overall), Brandeis (8-22-1 Overall)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After junior Caroline Langmeyer (Upper Arlington, Ohio) retired Brandeis in order in the top of the first, MIT got the first three batters on in the bottom of the frame to load the bases but were unable to get a run across.
  • The Engineers put runners on first and second with two outs in the second for first year Layla Thiessen (Carlsbad, Calif.) who poked the ball into rightfield to score junior Arianna Kumar (San Diego, Calif.) for the 1-0 lead, but MIT left two more runners stranded as Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass.) got a strikeout to end the inning.
  • Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif.) led off fourth with a triple to left and scored on a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game.
  • Thiessen singled to center with one out in the fifth and junior Ava Ladd (Austin, Texas) followed with a two-out single, but Kannan once again got out of the inning.
  • Looking to end the game, Thiessen recorded her fourth hit of the day with a one-out single and she then stole second to get into scoring position, but she would be left stranded as the game headed to extras.
  • Junior Olivia Scarpaci (Staten Island, N.Y.) threw out the Brandeis runner trying to steal third in the eighth for the first out as the Engineers escaped the inning. With Ladd on second in the bottom of the inning, Kannan retired MIT in order to send the teams to the ninth.
  • Brandeis used a walk and a single to push the go-ahead run across in the ninth and MIT went down 1-2-3 to end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The outing by Kannan is the longest of her career and is tied for the third longest by a Judges' pitcher since 2000. She improves to 4-5 on the season as she finished the day allowing seven hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts.
  • Thiessen went 4-4 with an RBI. First year Delaney Benevides (Plainville, Mass.), senior Mikayla Cable (Valrico, Fla.), and Ladd had the other hits for MIT.
  • Langmeyer went the first four innings allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Senior Katie Katsuyama (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) took the loss to fall to 2-4 as she threw the final five innings scattering two hits with one walk and one strikeout.

UP NEXT:

  • The Engineers will return to conference play with a doubleheader at Emerson on Friday, April 25 beginning at 3:00 PM. The Judges are also in action on Friday as they host Case Western for a twinbill.
