No. 19 Field Hockey Falls to No. 12 Cortland, 2-1, in Overtime

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – In its season opener played at Montclair State University, the No. 19 MIT field hockey team fell to No. 12 SUNY Cortland, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday afternoon. Shealy Callahan produced the lone goal for the Engineers.

THE BASICS:
  • Score: No. 12 Cortland 2, No. 19 MIT 1 (OT)
  • Records: No. 19 MIT (0-1 Overall); No. 12 Cortland (1-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Cortland opened the scoring after 1:28 elapsed and almost increased its lead when it was awarded a penalty stroke with 3:12 remaining, but goalie Maeve Zimmer came up with the save for MIT.
  • The Red Dragons controlled the action in the second quarter as they had a 9-3 advantage in shots, including a 5-2 margin in shots on goal, and were awarded six penalty corners while conceding none to the Engineers. However, MIT notched the equalizer with 5:07 left in the frame. A shot from Janie Thomas in the middle of the arc was saved but she corralled the rebound and sent another attempt to the cage. Her second try was blocked but Callahan collected the ball and slipped it inside the far post.
  • The third quarter was a defensive battle as Zimmer stopped both shots by Cortland while MIT notched two shots, one of which was blocked.
  • The stalemate continued in the fourth quarter despite the Engineers outshooting the Red Dragons, 7-2. MIT produced a flurry of activity in front of the cage over the course of two minutes, beginning with 4:44 remaining in regulation. After receiving its second penalty corner of the game, a shot by Thomas was blocked and then an attempt by Audrey Oh was saved.
  • Following another penalty corner, two more shots were blocked before a bid by Lucy Vanderhoff was saved with 2:23 to go.
  • Cortland nearly scored 11 seconds later; however, Zimmer made her second save of the period.
  • After some back-and-forth play in the extra session, Cortland found the back of the cage with 6:03 on the clock.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Zimmer ended the day with 10 saves.
  • The Red Dragons led the way in shots (18-13), shots on goal (12-4), and penalty corners (9-3).
