Big First Half Propels Field Hockey to 5-2 Victory Over Clark

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT generated four goals in the first half en route to a 5-2 victory over Clark University in NEWMAC field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. Bailey McIntyre and Janie Thomas both produced two goals and an assist for the Engineers while Elizabeth Cacciapaglia tallied one goal and one assist for the Cougars.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: MIT 5, Clark 2
  • Records: MIT (6-3 Overall, 2-0 NEWMAC); Clark (7-2 Overall, 0-2 NEWMAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • MIT opened the scoring after 3:10 elapsed. During a penalty corner, a pass from McIntyre was redirected by Meredith Wu at the near post and the ball dribbled across the goal line.
  • Five minutes later the Engineers increased their lead to 2-0. In transition, a pass by Thomas from the near side traveled through the circle and was chased down by McIntyre on the far side who pushed the ball back to the near post.
  • In the 21st minute, Marisa Montione sent a pass from the near sideline into the circle. The ball made its way through traffic and was quickly hit by McIntyre, giving MIT a 3-0 advantage.
  • A turnover in Clark's defensive end was collected by Natasha Parker who passed the ball to Thomas for the goal in the 24th minute.
  • Following a scoreless third quarter, Clark ended the stalemate 2:08 into the final frame. During a penalty corner, Cacciapaglia corralled Jenna Beauchain's pass on the far side and sent a blast through traffic that went from the far side to the near post.
  • The Engineers' final goal came in the 54th minute. Wu dribbled into the arc and passed the ball to Thomas who quickly shot it to the near post.
  • The Cougars capped the scoring with 53 seconds remaining. During a penalty corner, a strike by Cacciapaglia was deflected upwards by Olivia Bass at the far post.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Maeve Zimmer made five saves in 53 minutes while Alexia Ninios recorded her first appearance in net as she closed out the game for MIT.
  • Rachel Reiter collected nine saves for Clark.
  • The Engineers ended the day with advantages in shots (24-12), shots on goal (14-7), and penalty corners (14-6).
UP NEXT:
  • MIT returns to action on Saturday, October 4 when it travels to NEWMAC rival Springfield College for a 4:00 PM game.
  • Clark will host Regis College on Monday, September 29 at 7:00 PM.
