CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Nine unanswered goals in the second quarter helped propel MIT to a 24-4 victory over Wellesley College in the NEWMAC women's lacrosse opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field.
Annica Lam amassed six goals, one assist, six draw controls, and two caused turnovers for the Engineers while Milica Simic produced four goals, one caused turnover, and one draw control for the Blue.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Lam opened the scoring after 1:13 elapsed by connecting on a pass from Ashley Thomas. MIT quickly followed with a player-down goal from Thomas that was set up by Maeve McGinnis. Simic buried a free-position shot, making the score 2-1 at the 10:53 mark.A defensive battle ensued until Lam converted her free-position attempt with 5:43 remaining. Gwen Flusche and Samantha Moorhead increased the Engineers' advantage to 5-1, but Simic found the back of the net with 1:40 to go.
- Flusche sparked MIT's 9-0 run in the second quarter with back-to-back goals early in the period. Thomas registered one goal and four assists; Lam produced three goals and an assist; Jillian Butler scored twice, and Moorhead added a goal. Simic ended Wellesley's scoring drought with a player-advantage free-position goal, resulting in a 14-3 halftime score.
- The Engineers outscored the Blue, 4-0, in the third quarter with Thomas being a factor in the first three goals. She earned an assist on a blast by Flusche and then recorded two goals of her own. Mairin Anderson capped the frame with the first goal of her intercollegiate career.
- MIT continued to have the upper hand in the fourth quarter as it generated a 6-1 scoring margin for the 24-4 final. Alexis Reinard notched two goals and an assist while Moorhead chipped in two more goals. Simic registered the Blue's last goal of the day with 8:08 on the clock.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Thomas totaled six goals and six assists as Reinard finished with one goal, three assists, six groundballs, and two caused turnovers.
- Flusche posted four goals and five draw controls while Moorhead had four goals.
- Anderson tallied two goals, three groundballs, two caused turnovers, and two draw controls as Laura Day collected six draw controls and two caused turnovers.
- In net for the Engineers, Pauline Vien made one save in the first quarter, Molly Dulde played in the second quarter, Christina Fradella turned away three shots in the third quarter, and Ashton Flather closed out the game with one save.
- Eliza Wysong compiled four draw controls, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers while Navaal Malik registered three caused turnovers.
- Amelia Woodward chipped in three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
- Anna Blake Patrick made three saves during the first 19 minutes of the game while Scarlett McArthur stopped four shots during the next 30 minutes. Down the stretch in net, Aspen Caudill collected two groundballs.
