Cummings Hat Trick Leads No. 8 Women's Soccer to 5-0 Over Gordon

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Five quick second half goals, including a hat trick from Andrea Cummings led the No. 8 MIT women's soccer team to a 5-0 opening night victory over Gordon College on Tuesday night on Roberts Field. 
 
THE BASICS: 

  • Score: MIT 5, Gordon 0 
  • Records: MIT (1-0-0 Overall), Gordon (0-1-0 Overall) 

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • After a scoreless first half, the Engineers looked to break through as Amara Ukomadu had a point-blank shot in the 28th minute, but her shot was saved by Ivy Daniel. Arianna Doss then had a chance just seconds later, but Daniel made another diving save to keep the match scoreless. 
  • MIT finally broke through with a long-range goal from Cummings who took the throw in pass, turned past the defense, and rifled a shot outside of the box into the net at the 65:20 mark.  
  • Cummings made it a two-goal game, taking a pass from Leah Berey and putting the ball in the fall corner of the goal at 68:32. 
  • The hat trick was completed by Cummings with another strike to the upper corner of the goal at 80:55 off a one-touch pass from Arianna Doss
  • Ayla Sumer sent a pass back to Gabriella de Brito who notched the fourth goal of the game for MIT with 84:02 left. 
  • Doss made it a 5-0 game, taking a pass from Chloe Dai and beating Daniel at 85:17. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Cummings got her first career hat trick, and de Brito scored her first career goal. Berey collected her first point as an Engineer with her assist on Cummings' second goal. 
  • Doss had a three-point game with a goal and assist. 
  • Maddy Noll earned the clean sheet, making three saves. 
  • Daniel turned away eight shots from MIT. 

UP NEXT: 

  • The Engineers are back on the field on Saturday, September 5 as they travel to New York to take on NYU at 1:00 PM. Gordon will take on No. 19 Rochester on Saturday at 12:00 PM.
